OSFMount is a free utility designed for use withPassMark OSForensics™

Overview

Sep 12, 2019  Windows OS and most of the software do not support DMG files directly. Once it is converted to ISO file format, then it can be burned to CD or DVD in Windows OS. Even you can mount the ISO file in the virtual environment and use it. Under Windows 7, I used software called MagicISO to mount ISO images. When I migrated the machine to Windows 10 either because I did it manually, or the Windows installer did it automatically, MagicISO went away. The program is not listed on the list of installed programs. The folder where the program was installed is gone. What I do to mount DMG: Convert DMG to ISO format using AnyToISO app (comes as free Lite version, Pro version also available). The resulting ISO (HFS+ formatted) can be easily mounted to Vmware/VirtualBox machine if it's running OS X. You can also burn this image under Windows. Apr 02, 2019  It is a file which can be used to mount disk image files in Windows operating systems. It can be used to emulate a CD, DVD or any other disk drive in Windows virtually. It is generally used to hold disk images of operating systems like linux which can be burned into a disk or a USB drive.

OSFMount allows you to mount local disk image files (bit-for-bit copies of an entire disk or disk partition) in Windows as a physical disk or a logical drive letter. You can then analyze the disk image file with PassMark OSForensics™ by using the physical disk name (eg. .PhysicalDrive1) or logical drive letter (eg. Z:).

By default, the image files are mounted as read only so that the original image files are not altered.

OSFMount supports mounting disk image files as read/write in 'write cache' mode. This stores all writes to a 'write cache' (or 'delta') file which preserves the integriy of the original disk image file.

OSFMount also supports the creation of RAM disks, basically a disk mounted into RAM. This generally has a large speed benefit over using a hard disk. As such this is useful with applications requiring high speed disk access, such a database applications, games (such as game cache files) and browsers (cache files). A second benefit is security, as the disk contents are not stored on a physical hard disk (but rather in RAM) and on system shutdown the disk contents are not persistent. At the time of writing, we believe this is the fastest RAM drive software available.

OSFMount supports mounting images of CDs in .ISO format , which can be useful when a particular CD is used often and the speed of access is important.

Known issues

#1: On certain Windows systems (mostly Windows server 2016), when using OSFMount, Windows will prevent the OSFMount driver from loading. See the following page for more details, 'Why do I get the error, Error loading OSFMount Driver?'

Go menu allows access to the persistent global browser history.

#2: If you get an Access Denied message during install for the osfmount.sys file, or OSFmount driver is disabled error. Reboot the machine and reinstall. A previous version of the driver was likely still loaded in memory, preventing an update.

Supported File Extensions

OSFMount supports the mounting of the following Windows image file formats:

* The supported version of Advanced Forensics Format is AFFv3 with zlib compression support. Encryption and signatures are not supported.

RAM Drive Benchmarks

These RAM drive benchmarks were taken on a Intel i7-8700K CPU with 32GB RAM DDR4 PC4-19207 in dual channel mode. RAM disk size was 2GB, formatted with FAT32. Typical speeds with large linear blocks are around 10,000 MBytes/sec. With smaller 4K blocks and random access plus queue depth of 1, speed is still a very respectable 1,500 MByte/sec. Benchmarks were taken with PerformanceTest V9.

None of the versions of Windows operating system supports DMG format out of the box. As you likely know, DMG file is an OS X disk image file and are supported in Mac OS X operating system. One needs to take the help of third-party tools in order to open a DMG file on a PC running Windows operating system.

Those of you have spent considerable amount of time on Mac would know that the DMG is mostly used to install apps on Mac. In other words, apps that we download to install on a Mac OS X use .DMG extension and can be mounted easily by double-clicking on the file on Mac.

While there are a couple of handy options out there to open or extract a DMG file in Windows, we will share the best three tools to deal with DMG files in Windows environment.

DMG Extractor

DMG Extractor is probably the first and only tool designed exclusively to deal with DMG files on Windows OS. Since DMG Extractor is developed specially for DMG files, it can open encrypted .DMG files without having to first convert them to other formats.

Raw, Bzip2, Zlib, and Zero block type DMG files are supported by DMG Extractor.

The only catch with the free version of DMG Extractor is that it can’t open DMG file of size more than 4GB but that shouldn’t be problem for most users.

Using DMG Extractor is fairly simple. After installing the software, right-click on the DMG file that you want to open and then click Open option to open the file with DMG Extractor. Alternatively, after launching DMG Extractor, click Open button and then select the DMG file to contents of the selected DMG file.

To extract a DMG file, click the Extract button and then select a location to save the contents.

HFSExplorer

Another free utility that you can install on your Windows machine to extract DMG files is HFS+ Explorer. With HFSExplorer you can open Mac-formatted disks and disk images in Windows.

While HFSExplorer is relatively easy-to-use, we must mention that it’s not as straight-forward as DMG Extractor. You need to install Java SE Runtime Environment 5.0 or above in order to run HFSExplorer and it doesn’t support all type of DMG format, including DMG UDF format.

However, on the plus side, there is no size restriction per file.

Most PC users are familiar with 7-Zip utility. If you haven’t used 7-Zip before this, it’s a free tool used to compress and uncompressed files. In addition to 7z, Zip, and RAR formats, 7-Zip also supports DMG format. However, it’s important to note that 7-Zip supports only unpacking of DMG files.
